David Bowie isn’t dead.
David Bowie is a Rock God.
Rock Gods never die.
Rock n Roll will never die.
David Bowie is alive and rocking still.
David Bowie was one of the most powerful rock and rollers of the last 50 years. He did more in his short time on this planet than is conceivable. Time may change me, but I can’t change time. I am ecstatic and proud that my generation was the generation that honored, loved, supported, revered, idolized, listened too, dressed like, imitated and bought music from someone as crazy, idiosyncratic, insane, awesome, and purely rock and roll as David Bowie.
David Bowie was who he was. Some have called him “gender bending” because of the way he challenged every stereotype and the way he dressed. If you think that what he was doing was “gender bending” then you understand nothing at all. He was not attempting to bend genders one way or another, he was breaking apart the very core of your thoughts about the subject by simply not giving a fuck. He wasn’t a man who dressed like a woman dressing like a man dressing like an alien. He was David Bowie.
- Hedwig: I grew up listening to the American masters: Toni Tennille, Debbie Boone, Anne Murray–who was actually a Canadian working in the American idiom. Then there were the crypto-homo rockers: Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, David Bowie–who was actually an idiom working in America and Canada.
I am a child of the 80’s. I literally grew up with David Bowie. And Lou Reed and Iggy Pop. And all the other masters of rock that formed the foundation of my youth and adult life. Changes and Heroes were my theme songs and still resonate my core today. David Bowie is so much a part of who I am that I now know what it is that keeps my circle of friends and acquaintances together: It is a shared freak flag that is typified by David Bowie. David Bowie set us outcasts and rejects apart and showed us that we cold be heroes, even just for one day.
I have struggled all day to come to terms with the inconceivable notion that someone as iconic and life changing can possibly no longer be alive. How can a rock god die? I have come to realize that since David Bowie is a Rock God, he can not ever die. As long as we carry the fire of his passion and music he will live emblazoned in the stars and our hearts. Just like a Rock God should.
